More Than Therapy
The story behind More Than Therapy begins in January 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, a period marked by heightened stress, isolation, and uncertainty. Founded in Durham, North Carolina, More Than Therapy was created as an inclusive mental health platform to help people process the overwhelming stressors of life, particularly during a global crisis that amplified mental health needs everywhere.
From the outset, the vision was clear: to offer more than just traditional therapy by creating a community, a “village of dynamic individuals who help build each other up.” The founders, Felipe Khristopher Blue, Judithe Louis, and Camille Brown-Lowery, sought to provide a non-judgmental and stigma-free space where people could find support, resources, and genuine human connection. They brought together a team of licensed therapists with deep experience working with children, teens, individuals, and couples, all unified by a commitment to person-centered and solution-focused care.
More Than Therapy quickly distinguished itself by embracing a multicultural, peer-supported, and holistic approach. The Ubuntu philosophy... “I am because we are”, became central to its values, emphasizing interconnectedness and mutual support among people experiencing mental health challenges as well as the professionals who serve them. This belief in community-driven healing is deeply woven into all aspects of the organization, from therapy sessions and support groups to its specialty trainings and educational outreach.
In addition to clinical services, More Than Therapy expanded its impact through the launch of an influential podcast, which became listened to in over 25 countries. The podcast combines serious mental health conversations with practical tips, humor, interviews, and ongoing resources. It leverages the knowledge and experience of diverse professionals including clinicians, peer advocates, social workers, and educators, to break down isolation and encourage openness around mental health topics.
The pandemic-era origins of More Than Therapy instilled a sense of urgency and innovation. With growing awareness of mental health’s vital role across all walks of life, the organization dedicated itself to supporting both individuals in crisis and the professionals striving to make a difference, offering pro bono support, specialized trainings, and a wealth of digital and in-person resources.
Ultimately, More Than Therapy’s story is about rising to meet unprecedented need, transforming adversity into connection, education, and empowerment, and continuously working to redefine what supportive mental health care means in a changing world.

The Beginning
More Than Therapy was a program born out of the non-profit Ede Mwen which was founded by Judithe Louis, a movement initially focused on the HIV/AIDS crisis. The mission expanded into a holistic approach to wellness, with More Than Therapy being a program created to focus on mental wellness.
Our Hope
"My hope is that people who are in the helping field are further inspired and get the support they need to avoid the pitfalls of burnout in a field that can be very taxing especially in this day and time.
